Online Therapy Information

Online therapy is a way for you to engage in counselling using internet technology such as email, or webcam video, from a place of your choosing.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy has become a common practice, but there are some differences between this and 'in-person' therapy that are worth considering.

I have an Advanced Certificate in Counselling Online and have a lot of experience counselling, supervising and teaching in this way. Within my practice I offer email and webcam video counselling.

Webcam counselling

These are face to face sessions using Zoom. You will meet me on screen and I will create the same safe, calm environment online that you would expect in person. The sessions are 50 minutes long and I send you a link to my secure Zoom room for each session.

I zoom from a private, confidential space and I will talk to you about ways to get the most from the online experience. If you are unfamiliar with using Zoom I can also talk through this with you and help you feel comfortable with this setting.

Email counselling

This is regular scheduled email communication. This type of therapy is suitable for people who are comfortable with communicating in writing and who like the flexibility of not being confined to specific session times. It offers you the opportunity to consider what you wish to say before you send it as well as time between exchanges to reflect on the information you have received.

If desired we can also incorporate therapeutic and expressive writing techniques. You will be guided in how to set up a secure email account and will then have a set amount of email contacts with me each month.

Some benefits of Online Therapy

  • No physical accessibility issues
  • You can control your environment (for temperature/ light etc) and have comfort items or pets with you
  • You can work with someone outside of your local community
  • Secure encryption software offers confidentiality and peace of mind
  • When using email counselling you are able to review what you are saying before sending
  • Some find it easier to express their feelings by writing it down

Things to consider

  • Are you comfortable using internet technology?
  • Would you prefer to see your counsellor in-person?
  • Is there a computer or device that you can use privately without interruption?
  • Moving straight from your therapy back into your everyday life can be tricky, so we will talk about ways to manage this .

If using email counselling:

  • Do you feel you can express your feelings effectively using words?
  • Text communication can sometimes be open to misunderstanding as there are no nonverbal cues or body language for you or the counsellor to read.

Confidentiality

Online counselling therapy take place within a secure, encrypted environment to offer you confidentiality and safety. Email correspondence is encouraged through a secure mail server and you will be instructed on how to set up a confidential email account for your counselling therapy. Webcam counselling take advantage of the encrypted services offered by Zoom.
